Open Door Mission – March 2020

March News & Updates

Homeless Prevention Program Spotlight

Deborah and her two young sons were one of the first residents at the Coldwater House Women & Children’s facility when the doors opened in Aug/2018. She worked hard to obtain her driver’s license, become a leader in the Parent Leadership Institute, and pursue her goals of becoming a hairdresser. She was able to secure her own place in late Oct., but needed some assistance with the security deposit and first months’ rent. The Homeless Prevention Program helped her and her sons get into their own place, by paying her move in fees of $1,300.

The Bible League – March 2020

logo

A person’s lifetime commitment to Jesus can impact hundreds. That’s the story for Victor.

Twenty years ago, Victor graduated from Church Planter Training. He had volunteered for Bible League Mexico for years and finally planted his own church. He led the church for four years, then returned to farming. But, being a pastor was his calling, so soon after, he offered to care for an abandoned church in a nearby community.

With the guidance of the Lord, what started as a small gathering of Victor’s family soon turned into a full congregation. Victor served there for 18 years, then passed the torch to another Bible League-trained church planter. He is now in the process of starting another church, one he will eventually pass down to another graduate.

In all his time serving, Victor has watched the Lord work over and over. “I have seen many people receiving our Savior, Jesus Christ, in their hearts. I have seen the restoration of many families and transformation of individual lives. I have seen brothers grow up to be leaders, many who were freed from alcoholism and excruciating poverty,” he says. “God entrusted me to be loyal to the ministry. I have gone through many obstacles during the decades, but God has never left me.”

Through his Church Planter Training, Victor has impacted so many lives across Mexico. He has led churches, mentored leaders, and was even involved in translating the New Testament to the Mixe indigenous language. Praise God for his lifelong commitment!

Finding Faith in Prison

A man’s time in prison leads him to Christ

February 10, 2020

Oscar, a believer in Ghana.

Though 27-year-old Oscar grew up in a Christian family in the Upper West Region of Ghana, he didn’t understand what it meant to have a relationship with Jesus Christ—until he went to jail. A few years ago, Oscar worked for a mobile phone company, and he got into trouble when he made the wrong decision to replace a friend’s sim card. Unfortunately, Oscar’s friend lied.

He recalls, “That wasn’t his card, but it was his employer’s. He then went and withdrew a large amount of money without the employer’s permission.” When the truth came out, Oscar was liable and charged with aiding and abetting. He notes, “I tried to find the man, but the efforts deemed fruitless. At the time, I couldn’t repay the money. Therefore, I was taken to court.” Oscar pled guilty and was sentenced to 27 months in Tamale Central Prison.

One day, a pastor came to the prison to share the Gospel, and he encouraged Oscar to join a Project Philip Bible study there. He regularly began going to the study and really enjoyed the Prison Bible he received. He says, “What I liked the most about that Bible is that it’s easy to read and the lessons are easy to understand. Having the lessons in the Prison Bible has helped us to understand what we are reading and equipped us with how to share God’s Word with other inmates.”

Oscar served 18 months in prison before he was released. Though he still faces stigmas for being in jail, he was able to get a new job through believers who helped to lead Project Philip Bible studies within the prison. But above all, the greatest blessing to him is God’s Word. He beams, “The Prison Bible has changed a lot of Ghanaian inmates, both spiritually and mentally. It’s the Prison Bible that brought hope and transformation to those who felt rejected.”

God’s Word is her Inspiration

Project Philip Bible studies change Albanian woman’s life

February 3, 2020

Natasha and her husband.

Natasha, 40, comes from a Roma Muslim family. She is married with three children and lives in Albania. “I tried to follow the rules of Islam, but I found it very difficult to do it all,” she says softly. “However, it was the only way I knew how to seek God. But I didn’t find peace.”

She reveals their money problems led to quarrels at home. “My husband started to hang out with his old friends. This situation caused a lot of stress for me. One day, while I was at home, a woman came and knocked on my door. She talked to me about Jesus. I had never heard that message,” she explains.

Her husband did not want to hear about it. “I was very determined,” she says, “and eventually, I convinced him to go to church with me. As soon as we got in there, we felt a presence that I could not explain but I could tell it was God’s presence. People from the church invited us to be part of a Bible study group. We went regularly and completed the whole Project Philip Bible study.

“Through those studies, God completely changed my life and that of my family. I realized how much God loves me, that He died for me on the cross, and I accepted Him as Lord and Savior of my life. I started reading the Bible every day at home.”

Although uncomfortable at first, her husband also became a believer and the family’s situation changed completely. “We are blessed and happy,” Natasha reports. “The Bible is the inspiration for my life and my family. Through studying and believing in the Word of the Lord, my family and I were saved. Thank you for giving it to me for free because we couldn’t afford it. I like to share the Word of God with my friends. Please, keep on giving all Albanians the opportunity to learn and know about the true God through the Scriptures, as you did with me. May the Lord bless you!”

Additional Prayer Requests

May the Lord bless the upcoming Project Philip training in Jakarta, Indonesia, among 60 Christian education teachers. Pray that this training will equip these teachers to become more effective in sharing God’s Word with their students. Continue to pray for the residents of this area as they recover from devastating floods in the city last month.

A Bible League-trained Philip (Project Philip Bible study leader) in Mamelodi, South Africa, was murdered recently. Pray for comfort and peace for his wife and two daughters as well as the rest of his family. Please ask the Lord to protect the Philips and trainers as they work in dangerous places.

Tom & Leslie Johnson – February/March 2020

*****Here’s our February/March newsletter. By the time this went out today, we learned the week ahead will be a bit more chaotic for Leslie than planned. She is flying to Amsterdam tonight and the conference she was to attend has been cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns. Pray for wisdom for her and her colleagues on how to use that time well.*****

Thank you!!

First of all, THANK YOU!! Because of your generous donations in December, we ended the calendar year in the black. We are humbled by and grateful for your kindness, love, and support. We are facing some costs for our March and April travel.

After having the family come for Christmas, we have had a quiet schedule, giving us time to write and prepare for our upcoming trip.

We head to Europe next week. Leslie will go first, landing in the Netherlands to speak to some 12-14 year-olds at a Christian school. After an educational conference, she will head to Prague and meet Tom there. We both have plenty of ministry and work ahead.

Leslie will visit several Czech national Christian schools and speak later in the month at a Christian teachers conference about school improvement. Then she will fly to Rwanda to lead a pre-conference workshop on teaching with cultural intelligence.

Tom will have meetings in Prague with people connected to the Comenius Institute and in Bonn with the board and faculty of Martin Bucer Seminary. Right now, it is on his agenda to go to Ukraine. However, something came up just at this writing which might send him a different direction.

It feels a bit precarious to travel to Europe and Africa during this time of fear about COVID-19. Leslie is a little worried that we would get stuck in Europe. That wouldn’t be so bad except that Aimee is expecting in early May. We would hate not to be in North Carolina to be helpful. So we would like your prayers. Through out all of our travels, we’d appreciate prayers for:

  • Safety and health (especially with the COVID-19 stuff going on);
  • Encouragement to those we are working with;
  • And wisdom in our speaking engagements, that we speak the Lord’s words, not ours.

Thank you for the prayer and financial support that make our work possible.

My Unexpected Trip in January – Tom

I represented the World Evangelical Alliance at meetings of 25 Jewish, Muslim, and Christian leaders January 14 to 16, 2020, addressing the issues of religiously motivated conflict and persecution. The meetings were called by the U. S. State Department and the Vatican.

Sam Brownback, U. S. Ambassador for International Religious Freedom (in an interview with Religious News Service, Jan. 16) said, “I think the world is crying for this movement,” adding that even though the world might not want to talk about religion, the matter cannot be ignored. “If we’d involved the religious actors 30 years ago in the Middle East peace negotiations and discussions, saying ‘OK, this is what we are thinking about, what do you think? Help us build the peace,’ we might be somewhere today,” he said. “We still don’t have peace in the Middle East and the prospects don’t look particularly good.”

The meeting and following efforts envision multi-faith interventions wherever religions are contributing to hostility and violence, rather than contributing to the well-being of peoples and communities. In particular, the religions represented committed themselves in a brief statement:

  • “To focus such efforts towards those wracked by conflicts and carnage, where possible, by sending teams to one or two areas not yet served by multi-faith efforts to help spur and guide towards peace.
  • “To advocate before our political and civic leaders to use these values of religious freedom, civic equality, and societal change of differences as a foundation of laws, policies, and civic norms.”

I participated in two roles. As the WEA Envoy to the Vatican I attend some meetings in Rome; as WEA representative to engage Humanitarian Islam I am to see if there are ways that Christians and this large group of Muslims can cooperate on religious freedom. While talking on the phone with a senior figure from these Muslims a few days before going to Rome, we discovered that we agreed that “religious freedom” is often undefined. We worked together to use the excellent United Nations definition of religious freedom in these meetings.
There are not many Protestants who attend meetings such as this. I was very happy I could tell senior Muslim leaders, some from countries where Christians are persecuted, that our hundreds of millions of Evangelicals are in communication and have international representatives. This may lead to more respect for some less-visible churches.

While in Rome I also met with the Vatican bureau chief for Evangelical relations. Once again, we discussed, given our limited manpower, what we can do together that will truly be beneficial for Christians on both sides. We raised some options that are now being discussed.

Thank you for your continued support in prayer and with finances! We cannot do what the Lord has called us to do without your help.
The four people closest to Pope Francis are Muslim theologians. The man immediately to the Pope’s right is a senior, prominent Arab Sunni thinker; the man ahead of me, to my left is a prominent Indonesian Sunni thinker. Ambassador Brownback is farther to the right of the Pope, as is former US Ambassador for Religious Freedom, Rabbi David Saperstein. Some of the people are State Dept staff. The photo was taken in the building in the Vatican where the Pope makes his home.

The Lenz’ View – February 2020

Answers to Prayer

I realize that our last update was sent in November. We want to thank you for your continued prayers for our family while we’re on our home assignment. Many have asked about Daniel and his vision therapy. Daniel’s vision therapy has been going very well and he is making notable progress. I believe he only has about 9 sessions left to complete. I know he’ll be glad to have that behind him. Thank you for praying for Daniel in this way.
Another prayer request we have shared is in regards to the housing situation for Michael as he will be attending our mission’s boarding school at our field headquarters in Papua New Guinea. God has answered that prayer through the provision of dorm parents for this coming school year. Michael will be staying at the dorm for 8-week terms and then, at the completion of each term, he will have a time with us before starting the next term. We are thankful that the school year is broken up in this way so that we can have time together throughout the year.
A current prayer request is that we are starting to look for plane tickets for our return to PNG this coming June. Please be praying with us that God will provide reasonable fares for our family to get back and for the provision of the finances for those tickets.

A Time to Rest

Last week we were blessed beyond measure by Quiet Place Ministries, who provided our family with a 5-day retreat over the kids’ mid-winter school break. This was a great time of spiritual and emotional refreshment and it provided a great time to rest and re-connect as a family. This has been the first time on our home assignment that we have not had to share our room with our 4-year old. It was wonderful to have time just for our family and to be able to spend some one-on-one time with each one of the kids throughout the 5 days.
Quiet Place Ministries purpose is to “provide retreats for individuals, married couples, and families serving in Christian ministry.  At no charge, pastors, missionaries, and others can enjoy a time of renewal, relaxation, and refreshment.” They are a very small organization which provide for those in full-time ministry in a BIG way! We would encourage you to reach out to QPM to see how you might be able to help provide refreshment for those who are serving in full-time ministry.

Long Journey Ahead

We will be leaving tomorrow, Friday, Feb 14, to head to New York, via Canada, to speak at one of our supporting churches. From there we’ll drop down to Pennsylvania for 5 days connecting with some of our supporting pastors at a Church Leader’s Retreat at Ethnos360’s Wayumi campus. This will be an awesome time for these pastors to gain a deeper understanding of what their church is a part of through their partnership with us (and other Ethnos360 missionaries).
This is going to one of our longer journeys in a time of the year when the weather can be quite unpredictable. Please pray for safety in travel over the next week.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support. We appreciate each one of you!

News from the Fields-February 2020

In honor of Valentine’s Day tomorrow

Here are a few of our favorite things

This is right out of Dave’s notes that he will be teaching in class today. These truths about us are our top favorite things that we are so thankful for!

Justification: Christ’s “right-ness” applied to me.
Reconciliation: Brought back to original love.
Propitiation: Satisfaction with the performance of His Son.
Regeneration: New Creation – God is not working from the old.

My #1 favorite is my man! First of all, he is the best husband in the world and a very active and present dad in the lives of our 2 young men. He’s been juggling teaching the students 2 hours everyday, plus being a student at seminary and keeping up with his homework there! He still enjoys having students in for great conversations and fun events. Plus he is finding time to paint the place we will be moving into next month. Plus Plus…I have everything to be thankful for in this man of mine!

Here are a couple of my favorite things 😀
Reece is eating up being a student here at Bible School. He is growing like crazy and rooting His trust deep in the Lord. He loves taking guys out for coffee and using his gifts of listening and counseling.

Clark Is also turning into a man who knows who his guide and best friend is. He recently shared his testimony in front of his youth group of 150 high schoolers and was thrilled watching the Lord walk him through that important step of faith.

The students are also on our favorites list! Like the student I will be having coffee with this afternoon, or the student Dave is meeting with this afternoon. Also like the group who is coming over for game night tonight or the group we are going bowling with this weekend. We are among 200 of our favorite things and we are truly blessed.

And YOU!!!

Your prayers, your support, your encouragement… All mean the world to us! It takes a team for us to be here, and you are our dream team! Thank you, thank you, for your part in allowing us to serve here in the lives of these Bible School students!!

New from Tom & Leslie Johnson – Nov/Dec 2019

Tom’s Report on the Indonesia Trip
I spent November 6 to 14 in Indonesia for the General Assembly of the World Evangelical Alliance as one of 800 delegates representing 650 million Christians whose churches belong to the WEA.  A few thousand people from the local churches joined us for the opening ceremony. In addition to speaking at a workshop, I had numerous meetings with individuals and time with the staff of our department whom I do not see very often. My academic assistant, Kyle Wisdom, was a tremendous help.

What to do in response to persecution and opposition was a theme in many meetings; next steps are being planned.  I am especially grateful for the time I had with the Vatican bureau chief for evangelical relations who attended as an official observer. He and I began to identify topics to discuss when I next visit their offices in Rome. My speech should be published soon by the WEA Theological Commission in the Evangelical Review of Theology. A preliminary version is available here

While in Indonesia I also coordinated a team of Christian scholars who met with a team from the Humanitarian Islam movement, which has its offices in Jakarta. This is the world’s largest Muslim organization, representing some 90 million people. We had a very friendly meeting, lasting a good part of a day. An Indonesian cabinet minister who is a Christian joined us for dinner. There should be more to report on this relationship. I am preparing a study on the distinctives of this type of Islam.

I was exhausted when I got home, but I am thankful to you and to God for these opportunities. Such work would not be possible without a faithful group of people praying, encouraging, and giving. Now I am considering how to follow up on these meetings. Pray for God’s wisdom.
Thank you for the prayer and financial support that make our work possible.

Financial Update
Thank you for the encouraging donations in the last few weeks! We are optimistic about getting caught up by the end of the year. It is on our hearts to continue our efforts for several years. To do that we continue to need a loyal and generous team behind us.

Tom’s health
Tom survived Indonesia and the change of food. However, he did need to start taking meds while there to calm his system. We are thanking the Lord for the effectiveness of the meds and his relatively good journey.

Next….
I am working on developing a fourth workshop for my “Teaching with Cultural Intelligence” series. Please join me in praying for wisdom in the content. I would like to help teachers work with different cultures in their classrooms well.

Thank you for your continued support in prayer and with finances! We cannot do what the Lord has called us to do without your help.

Grace Covenant Ministries – Jake Moss – Jan/Feb 2020

Dear Prayer Warrior,

With the new year upon us we look ahead and anticipate challenges that are appearing on the horizon.  Society seems to be constantly changing.  The task of how to present the unchanging story of God’s love to His creation continues to be our mission.

Here are some of the challenges.  We ask for your prayers as we seek to remain in the center of the work that God is blessing.

  1. Because of a variety of competing programs in youth basketball, we are looking for different options on how to engage with young students.
  2. In February, Lincoln Oaks, the faith-based addiction recovery program operating on our campus will be changing from a men’s treatment program to a women’s program.
  3. Hacker Gym, which was built in 1930, is a place of constant activities.  Over the past 15 years, the gym has undergone a series of improvements.  This year we hope to finish the community fitness center phase of the project.  We are now seeking the finances to install gutters to the facility and to replace one of the old heating systems.
  4. The summer camp season has been one of the highlights of our endeavors each year.  The plans for this year are now being finalized.
  5. Funding is always a challenge.  Getting funds for special projects and our operational needs continues to be an ongoing task.  We face the future with confidence because we have seen how God has blessed us through your prayers and financial gifts. It is our desire to be faithful stewards of His blessings.
  6. Our Board of Directors will be meeting on February 15.  They will be prioritizing projects and approving plans for this year.  We are reminded of the fact that we can make plans but if God is not in them all our planning is useless.

Thank you for partnering with us!

A new semester starts today!

Take a look at our guest speakers for opening day!

Colton and Shawna Williams are our guest speakers!

They were in the first class we met when we arrived on staff here 10 years ago!

Now they are missionaries in a tribe in Papua New Guinea where they have learned the language and are teaching and raising leaders in a brand new baby church!

We love it when our students return to shed a spotlight on the Lord and what He is doing through them!

Colton & Shawna are sharing with the students how much of their time has been difficult, yet they remind us how God is continually faithful and worth it in every way.

Thank you for partnering with us, for the Coltons and Shawnas sitting in the classrooms today.
