Title: Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say

Scripture: James 5:7-12, Matt 5:33-37

Theme: Come watch to find out!

  1. Quit using the _____________________________ Name carelessly.
    1. James’ hearers used God’s Name lightly to endorse their sincerity.
    2. Some examples.
  2. Quite honestly represent _____________________________.
    1. Let your yes be yes and your no, no.
    2. That brings us to this reality: It costs to honestly represent ourselves.

Questions for Study:

  • In what situations are people required to swear an oath?  What is the purpose of a solemn oath?  What is God’s involvement in it?
  • The subject matter of what two of the Ten Commandments does James take up in v. 12?
  • In oaths, the swearer uses God’s Name.  In Scripture, is God’s Name only the specific moniker or is there more to God’s Name?  See Exodus 33:19, 34:5-7, Psalm 20:1, Matthew 23:16-22
  • How do the following texts echo and parallel what James 5:12 requires: Proverbs 11:1, 16:11, 12:13-22, 26; Ephesians 4:15, 25, 5:6-13; etc
  • Whit whom would you rather deal, someone whose concern is appearing honest, or someone whose concern is being honest?
