Fields’ Report – Ethnos 360 – August 2021

130 Freshmen and the rest of the students are arriving today!!!

Here is a speedy hi-light update.

Dave & I celebrated our 25th anniversary this summer!! We were able to enjoy an incredible summer that had margin to rejuvenate, and prepare for this new semester that is starting this weekend!!

We have enjoyed spending more time with our church family! Dave has been given opportunities to preach the message for the Sunday service! He will be giving the message this Sunday on Acts 15. I have enjoyed being on the mission’s team, and Reece is on the security team. It’s a great family!

I have decided to go to community college! Pretty crazy, right? I will only be taking one class at a time so that I can keep up with home life, EBI life, church life and college life. Okay, if it doesn’t work, I’ll stop, but I want to at least try. 🙂 One 3 hour classroom period per week plus online homework.  I will be taking classes for a leadership development associate degree. You should see the list of classes, they fit PERFECTLY into exactly what I do in the mobilization department here at EBI. I have already had one class period…I absolutely ate it up, and it immediately helped me understand my role better. My class was on the difference between managers and leaders, and ineffective and effective leadership. Yes, this will be one awesome class. If anyone feels like helping pay my tuition, I wouldn’t say no.:) The total associates degree including tuition, textbooks and all costs will be  $12, 000.

Today my job here in mobilization was to set up the lobby and prepare and manage the room leaders to meet all their roommates when they arrive. The room leaders will greet them, give them a tour, a free drink at the coffee shop, set them up for registration tomorrow, acquaint them with the opening days schedule, unload their car and help them move in. We have 50 of the most amazing student leaders in the whole world, happily loving every person who enters the building.

TOMORROW is registration. Each student has signed up for a 15 minute window, and I am one of the many people helping register students tomorrow. This is new for me, and not officially part of mobilization per say, but all of us staff are busy using our gifts to help wherever we can during this first super busy week.

SUNDAY NIGHT is grand opening!! Worship and the service are on the front lawn! Dave is one of the speakers for the evening!!
Come one, Come all !!!

THANK YOU for supporting our family financially and in prayer as we begin our THIRTEENTH Bible School kick-off!! We appreciate you so very much!!!

Here we go!
Dave, Kim, Reece & Clark Field

August 16, 2021

Dear Prayer Warriors,

“Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not  As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.”  These words from the hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness”, provide us hope and comfort as the seasons change,Our summer camp sessions have ended, and the pool is closed for the year. The Academy on campus has welcomed students back to school. Our fall baseball season is off to a great start. The number of campers was up significantly over previous years for which we are thankful. Yes, God is faithful!

Our happiness is tinged with concern as Covid is reappearing in our community. Thankfully, at the present time, deaths due to the virus have been few in our area. The local public school has delayed the starting date for classes. The area Veterans Health Fair (scheduled for September), hosted by our Veterans Outreach program, has been canceled for the second year in a row.   Scheduling into the future is complicated by the ever-changing guidelines being published. Your prayers are coveted as our staff strives to be faithful to God’s calling.  We are reminded of the fact that none of us knows what tomorrow will bring. But we do know who holds our future.

Your faithful support is helping us to make a difference in our community.  Please pray that our ears and hearts will be open to the opportunities to share the love of our Savior to those we have been called to serve here in Appalachia.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.  May we continue to rejoice in knowledge of God’s faithfulness.

Refugee Special Request Update

Thank you so much for your generosity toward our refugee friends!

Because of gifts from many in the US, Canada, and Europe, the budget need has been met. There is a little left over to pay forward toward the needs of another refugee family coming under the care of the same organization in Ontario.

he Canadian paperwork for the family is moving slowly, which is common for refugees, but the fact that this paperwork is in motion should protect them from deportation to their country of origin. (Tom is copied on many of these communications.) But there are many things that can go wrong in such a large transition! And even if the legal, financial, and travel matters go okay, they are facing countless changes: new country, new church, new school, new jobs, new friends, etc.

Please mention them to our Heavenly Father regularly.

A Successful Book Launch –Tom’s Update

Giving a speech at the Nation’s Mosque in Washington, DC, now that’s something I didn’t expect when I graduated from a traditional Protestant seminary 40 years ago! But then I did not expect to spend years on religious freedom, did not comprehend that old Muslim/Christian conflicts would become globally important, nor expect that the world’s largest Muslim organization would want to work with the world’s largest Protestant organization to set a new direction. The occasion was the launch of a book I coedited with a Muslim counterpart, God Needs No Defense: Reimagining Muslim-Christian Relations in the 21st Century, available as a free download here, during the International Religious Freedom Summit called by Senator Sam Brownback

The title God Needs No Defense is a response to the way many people in several countries think they are defending God by means of violent jihads, whether they are in Afghanistan, Nigeria, or Somalia. This title was first used for an essay by that name which is famous in parts of the Muslim world, published by Abdurrahman Wahid, who was the first democratically elected president of Indonesia (1999-2001), as well as a leading Muslim theologian. We included that essay in our book, along with another pivotal essay by Wahid; then the Muslim scholars working on this book asked me to write essays from the perspective of Protestant theology that parallel the themes addressed by President Wahid, so that this group of four essays by Wahid and myself became the philosophical core of the book. In this way our joint Muslim/Christian team is setting a new role model to replace the model of jihads and responding crusades, that of serious theological discussion of the ethical foundations for life together in multi-religious societies.

At a nice dinner at the end of our first long meeting with this group of Muslims in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2019, I made a mini speech in which I said I would be disappointed if the Muslims at the table did not try to convert me to Islam because we Christians are always trying to convert Muslims to Christianity. We are all trying to convert each other; I am convinced Christianity is true and our Muslim counterparts are convinced that Islam is true. At the same time, we want our grandchildren of both faiths to be good neighbors to each other, and it is our job as theologians of both faiths to explain how and why Muslims and Christians can be good neighbors and friends. Jointly we are responding to both religious extremism and secular extremism.

The book was a festival volume (Festschrift) presented to Dr. Thomas Schirrmacher (from Germany), the new head of the World Evangelical Alliance, by Pak Yahya Staquf, head of the world’s largest Muslim organization (from Indonesia). The event was hosted by Imam Talib Shareef, head of the Nation’s Mosque, the first American mosque built by descendants of American slaves. This group of American Sunni mosques is embracing the type of Muslim theology represented by Yahya Staquf.

It has been fascinating to see how the media reported on this event. Christianity Today used the title, “Christian and Muslim Leaders Agree on Legitimacy of Evangelism,” Religion Unplugged used the title, “The World’s Largest Muslim Organization Just Honored Evangelicals.” James Dorsey, an expert on religious and ethnic conflict at the Middle East Institute commented, the “recent unprecedented alliance between Muslims and Evangelicals takes on added significance in a world in which human rights are on the defensive.” And the prominent German newspaper, the Frankfurter Allgemeinecontrasted the models of relating to Muslims used by the Vatican and by the WEA.

“The encounters [of the Vatican with Muslim leaders] were important simply because of their symbolism. However, they have not produced a sustainable Christian-Islamic dialogue. In 2019, Pope Francis issued a declaration on the fraternity of all people with the Egyptian Grand Imam Ahmad al-Tayyeb, and in 2021 he visited the Shiite Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Iraq. As early as 2007, the then Saudi King Abdullah was a guest of Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican State. However, this has not led to theological cooperation.

“Greater hopes are attached to the dialogue currently led by two large independent organizations: the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), whose national member organizations include several hundred million Christians, and the Indonesian Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the world’s largest independent Islamic organization with more than 90 million members. A year ago, they founded a joint working group that wants to be a voice against religiously motivated violence and religious persecution.

“They reaffirmed their cooperation at an event on July 13 at a mosque in Washington and with a book on Christian-Islamic dialogue published by both sides. WEA Special Envoy for Engagement [with Humanitarian Islam] and co-editor Thomas K. Johnson said that despite all the differences between the two religions that continue to exist, it is possible to live peacefully together, beyond the paths of jihad and the Crusades. That doesn’t rule out proselytism from either side.”

I would like to thank all of you who have been praying, giving, and encouraging to make this kind of effort possible. I would also like to thank the US State Department, which, at my request, issued special travel documents to allow the Schirrmachers to travel to the US in spite of Covid travel restrictions “as a matter of national interest.”

Leslie’s Update

The ACSI EU team is planning the Student Leadership Conference (SLC) which will be held September 22-24. Though we had hoped to be in person, once again it will be fully online.  Though in Europe covid restrictions were lightening, the countries were often not allowing students to travel without parents. Schools were then unable to sign up their students for an in-person conference. Then the delta variant started having an impact. Thus, we had to make the decision to be completely online again. Please pray for wisdom for the team as we work through preparation for this event. Pray especially for the speakers and workshop leaders, as well as Roslyn Barnes as she works with student discussion leaders.

My studies with the Institute for Cross-Cultural Mission (ICCM) has continued throughout the summer months and I continue to read, watch, participate in cohort meetings, and learn. A problem has come up with my practicum. It got put on hold in January due to COVID. In mid-July, I learned that it needed to be completely cancelled. Please pray for me to find another practicum that helps me apply what I am learning. Pray for me to also manage time well so I can continue to delve into books and webinars about topics of cultural sensitivity.

Leslie is still looking for a few more “guinea pigs,” people who are willing to take the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), which assesses a person’s intercultural capability. (For more information on the assessment, you can look at it here.) It costs $30 and about 20 minutes to take the assessment. After you take the assessment, Leslie would offer free of charge a debrief that would take about an hour to an hour and a half.

You would be expected to pay for the assessment, but the debrief would be free. It would help me get some practice in a skill I am interested in developing.

If you are interested, please contact me at
lesliepjohnson@lesliepjohnson.com
. Thanks!

Praises:

We thank the Lord for:

  • Fantastic financial help which arrived for the refugee family, and they are fully funded!
  • A successful book launch of God Needs No Defence. Their jointly authored book Is available on websites and should soon go to bookstores.
  • Tom’s opportunity to coordinate a team of Evangelicals and Indonesian Muslims.
  • Continuing opportunities for Tom to advise the State Department.
  • Leslie’s opportunity to continue working with her ACSI EU and Global colleagues to strengthen Christian teachers, administrators, and schools.
  • Leslie’s opportunity to study theology and intercultural competence to contextualize her training and experience to the US setting.

Prayers:

Please join us in praying for:

  • The refugee family’s transition to a new culture. They will need tremendous courage to face huge challenges in their up-coming transition. Pray for protection from discouragement. Their government paperwork is moving slowly. Pray for the paperwork to get finished and for them to move to the new country safely and efficiently.
  • The Lord’s purposes for COVID-19 to be accomplished around the world and that he would end it. Soon. Lord willing, by the end of 2021.
  • Creative ideas to help persecuted Christians around the world and safe places for them to go.
  • Leslie’s work with ACSI Europe as the team plans the Student Leadership Conference for September 2021. Pray especially for the school chaperones as they lead their students through yet another online conference.
  • Leslie to find a new practicum for her work in the ICCM cohort program.
  • Continued wisdom for Tom as he (on behalf of the WEA) engages the world’s largest Muslim group about religious freedom.
  • Wise next steps for WEA-Vatican relations. Covid-19 has caused serious delays in meetings.
  • Tom as he considers which books to write next.
  • For Christians around the world to be strengthened to serve God and others in their communities, whether those “others” are different in beliefs, color of skin, nationalities, etc.

Thank you for your faithful prayer for us as well as your financial gifts that allow us to do the work He has called us to.

The Johnsons – Refugee Update, August 2021

News from Tom and Leslie Johnson

Refugee Ministry Update

Thank you so much for your generosity toward our refugee friends! Because of gifts from the US, Canada, and Europe the budget need has been met! We are praising our Lord for your generosity! We plan to use what is left over to pay forward toward the needs of another refugee family coming under the care of the same organization in Ontario. Please let us know if you have questions.

Now that the financial need is met for the family we have been called to help, we would request you join us and all pray urgently for them. There are so many things that can go wrong in such a large transition! And even if the legal, financial, and travel matters go okay, they are facing countless changes: new country, new church, new school, new jobs, new friends, etc. Please mention them to our Heavenly Father regularly. We will keep you posted as we learn of progress in their transition.

We have been busy with other matters as well. For example, last week saw the launch in Washington, DC of a new book which Tom co-edited with a Muslim counterpart, God Needs No Defense: Reimaging Muslim-Christian Relations in the 21st Century. It may be downloaded here. We will plan to send you a more complete newsletter in about a week.

Scarlet Thread Ministries – August 2021 (Part II)

Artisan Gate Theater Update

With COVID regulations relaxed, AGT has found many live concert fans desperate for live music.  Some recent concerts have featured Shane and Lindsey Buyck, The Cottage Street Band, and Lifted Worship Band.  Slated for the end of summer are Jim Drew, The Season, and additional acts featuring  jazz, finger style guitar, and even a comedy night.
You can sign up to receive concert announcements at www.scarletthread.org, or follow us on facebook.  We remain in need of volunteers willing to assist with our café.  Volunteers are also needed to assist with sound and potential production and venue upgrades.  For more information, reach out to Don by emailing don@scarletthread.org.

Recapping STM Apple Blossom Event!

Scarlet Thread Ministries was able to make multiple appearances during the Apple Blossom Festivities on July 10th and 11th. Saturday we were happy to connect with the community and further draw awareness of what Scarlet Thread is all about. Sunday we were able to do that as well by having one of our staff members, Hannah Jamison, give the children/youth message at the Apple Blossom Sunday Service at the grandstands! It was such a blessing to serve the community in this way. Special thanks to all that dedicated their time to help us with all our events and donating baskets and baked goods for the Williamson Youth Center.

Scarlet Thread Ministries – August 2021

Ministry Update

As the dust settles from the past school year, we pray for wisdom and a fresh approach to the next school year.  Any rhythm or routine we had become accustomed to the past school year was interrupted.  The inability to plan with so many unknowns brought frustration at times.  The positive outcome however was the moment by moment reliance on seeking God’s plan and direction, in spite of the inability to predict what was next.  The Apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 1:9 when speaking of overwhelming hardships that he had faced in Asia, ”but this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead… “. The challenges the ministry has faced this past year are not truly comparable to Paul’s trials, but we still find peace in knowing God is able to carry us in difficult times. Please keep us in prayer as we continue the work of sharing the gospel with the teens of Wayne County.

Youth Center Updates

As summer has kicked in, the Marion Youth center numbers have decreased to about 20-30 kids when we gather. For the summer Marion Youth center is taking a slight break. We are gathering with youth once a month to grill, eat, and play games. We feel extremely blessed that the Second Reformed Church in Marion opens up its church to these kids. The church always is quick to give to the kids and provide whatever the kids may need that could create a fun and safe place to ultimately allow an opportunity to share the gospel. For our summer gatherings, the church has been lending us grills to use to make hotdogs for the kids. This has been a blessing to gather in more of an informal setting and further connect with the youth in the community.

For the first time ever, the Clyde Youth Center is able to operate two days per week throughout the summer.   The ongoing partnership with the Clyde Savannah after school program has continued to facilitate outreach to an ever increasing number of students.   Jacob, the pastor of the hosting church along with the school staff have not only facilitated the program for the school year, but will remain committed to the site for the summer!  The site will operate Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4pm for the summer.  The school has also planned a community wide celebration in the fall that will use the interactive bounce equipment STM provides for school and community outreach events.  We are thankful for the momentum we all share in this community based partnership!

The last few months at the Newark Youth Center have been a lot of fun. We have had 50 different kids come at different times. We have a core group of 8-10 that come every week, and each time they come, they are reaching out to friends, saying that they have to come out to the center. One of the new favorite things at the center is Rock Band on the Xbox. They race into the game room to try and get to that game first. Last month we had generous donations of a Nintendo Switch with games and controllers, a new big screen tv, and some updated games for the PS4. Every week we have a free snack prepared by our volunteers and while they are eating we do a devotional with them. The week we spoke about the prodigal son, every teen had a personal experience to share that related to the message. As we continue to improve the center, we believe God is going to use it to reach more and more students and that we will see God work in them in mighty ways.

The North Rose Wolcott Youth center is anxious to get things rolling again!  Several obstacles have prevented the center from opening this past school year.  A recent call from one of the faithful volunteers helped us move forward on tackling the obstacles that had shut down the site.   We are excited to begin planning for the new school year and to restart the collaborative partnership we have with the NRW school district.  The Faith United Methodist church that hosts the center has a new pastor in place and will assist in gathering additional site staff.   We are excited to restart this vibrant program in which Pastor Diane Walker and so many volunteers had invested so much time and energy.

The Williamson Youth center wrapped up the school year with a ton of excitement worth sharing. We celebrated the end of the school year with a party full of inflatable games, tournaments, and prizes, that resulted in 50 kids returning to the youth center the following week. Site director, Hannah Jamison, came back from her wedding and honeymoon to start the Williamson Summer schedule.   The Williamson summer schedule consists of Tuesday breakfast with Hannah, Danette, and girls, Wednesday Bible Study for both boys and girls, and continuing Thursday Youth Center, with some fun events mixed in. The kids are spending the summer memorizing verses during our devotional time and seem to be enjoying it thus far. The exciting part is that they aren’t just memorizing verses, but they are learning what these verses mean and how they can apply them to their lives. Keep praying for energy and enthusiasm for our dedicated volunteers at this youth center and courage for the kids attending to continue to grow in their curiosity of the Lord.

Hello from the Mill Street Youth Center in Sodus.  While you’re reading this, we are probably open for our summer hours (Monday and Friday, 12:00-5:30pm).  Being open pretty much year-round and two days a week would not be possible without a major time commitment from our volunteers. Some of them teach, some clean, prepare snacks, run our front desk, play games inside and outside, run special activities like mini-tournaments. All of them help supervise (keep the place safe), talk to kids here, and show there are people in the church who care enough to sacrifice time for their benefit.  I think, especially in Sodus, our youth center provides afterschool and free-time options kids wouldn’t have much of without it.  This summer we’ll have some basketball tournaments and cookouts on the grill for our kids.  If you think you might have time to volunteer or have a kid you think could benefit here, please come check us out.

Our ministry in Lyons continues to reach kids at the Lyons Community Center.  We typically use the back gym at the Center and have been open on Thursdays since we re-opened this past school year.  This is a blessing because many students know the Center as a place they already can go, and they have even more options for recreation when we run our program.  We get a lot of students who are into sports and looking for a game or somewhere to shoot hoops.   A number of students here have noticed and appreciated the fact there are people who will take the time to make the center’s facilities available to them and spend money to provide other rec options and snacks.  This has gained some credibility for us when we talk about Jesus.  More volunteers, especially some who don’t mind a gym environment, would be a great help.  Please consider contacting Scarlet Thread if you live or work in Lyons and want to check us out and think about helping.

Please pray for wisdom as we navigate potential plans for the Walworth Youth Center.  The site has been in hiatus for over a year now due to several obstacles outside of our control. We are hopeful following recent communication with the host church that there may be some new options for getting things going again.  Please pray!

Child Evangelism Fellowship International – The Hautle Family

August 1, 2021

Dear praying friend,

You shall remember the LORD your God Deuteronomy 8:18

Happy Swiss Independence Day! The Swiss are remembering today when 730 years ago an oath was taken on a beautiful mountain meadow which gave birth to the country.
We’re remembering too, how God has worked these last few months. They’ve been tiring, but good. Thanks for partnering with us in prayer through moves, training courses, camps and a week away.
Tomorrow morning we leave early for our final week of day camp, traveling to Centre County. We’d really appreciate your prayers as we teach missions and help at the camp. Pray the children will get excited about missions, and especially for the salvation of any who don’t yet know Jesus.

PRAISES

  • Brent’s parents are moved in and getting settled. We’re thankful for safety during the entire move and were incredibly blessed with everyone who helped with the loading and unloading of the truck.
  • Christian Youth in Action® training was fantastic! We had a blast sharing the missions moment each day and getting to know the summer missionaries from all over PA.
  • Our week at a CEF day camp in Schuylkill County was very encouraging. The children were enthusiastic and we had a great time pouring into them. One boy who comes from an unchurched family was particularly inquisitive and asked many great questions.

REQUESTS

  • August 2-6 we’re helping and teaching at a CEF day camp in Centre County.
  • Because we’ve been away most of the summer, we have not had a chance to work on our office. We have two tasks left in order to finish it—flooring and trim. We’ve looked into hiring someone to do it, but anyone in the construction industry is booked solid for months. If you have trim and/or flooring experience and would like to lend a hand any time after August 8, feel free to contact us.
  • We have a large project—the complete redesign of five course books. We’d appreciate prayer for creativity and to get the work done in a timely manner.

Thank you! We greatly covet your prayers!

Brent, Jen, Amy and Christopher Hautle

Kraybill Update – Summer 2021

Greetings from Florida, where it’s hot and sunny, and Covid is running rampant.  This email is long overdue, so we apologize for not writing sooner. A lot has been happening in our lives in the last 3+ months since we last sent out an update.

We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Autumn and Anissa’s graduation in April and having them live with us for most of the summer.  Although we thought we would have moved to Italy by now, being in the States allowed us to go to our niece’s wedding in Pennsylvania and be here for Lori’s family’s reunion.  What a joy to be a part of these celebrations!  There are pictures below if you make it to the end of this email.

We’re not going to lie; being “in-between” and in transition isn’t always easy.  Moving from house to house (3x this year), answering “we don’t know” when asked when we’re moving to Italy, can get old, but we are so thankful for each provision and seeing how God has worked through each situation. Our Northern Region team leader is currently on his second trip to Italy, scouting out locations for our office.  We would appreciate your prayers for wisdom and direction as this decision will be made soon.  With this in mind and with the support of our leaders, we’ve decided to wait until January to move to Italy.  This will give us some stability and the opportunity to support Anissa after she finishes her clinical and starts looking for a job and finding a place to live.

We continue to work remotely for the Northern Region, helping new workers get to North Africa and equipping them to serve well where they have been called.  We’ve attached a prayer guide that was made by our office to pray for the workers and work being done in North Africa.  We’ve copied an excerpt below.

Stretching from western Senegal to the eastern Horn region of Somalia, are a people
who predominantly follow Islam. They do not “know Him” (the Christ) in His fullness.

Paul asked these four worthy questions of his readers in Rome,
“How shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed?
And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard?
And how shall they hear without a preacher?
And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” (Romans 10.14-15)
~ Ask Him for the north region’s people groups to come to know Him in His fullness & glory.
~ Ask Him to call, direct, & send His workers to clear, plant, water, & harvest in His fields.

The pandemic has challenged workers to adapt to travel restrictions & changes in each of their localities.
It has required prayer, boldness and flexibility. They have had to modify their businesses and ‘sharing methods’.
They have had to steadfastly lean into His wisdom and favor for all sorts of helps.
They are showing unmovable patience through uncertainties.
They are walking forward by faith, asserting their labor is not in vain.
They are praising despite unexpected, sorrowful, even traumatic conditions and events.
They are trusting His faithfulness.
They are seeing many searchers come with questions & also wanting to read from the good news!
~ Thank Him for each of these graces He has enabled them with!

Each one of our girls is in transition and would appreciate your prayers; please pray for:

~Alanna as she has moved to the member care department of AIM and continues to work with missionary kids.

~Autumn as she has accepted a teaching job at a learning center for students with disabilities in Bartow, FL.

~Anissa as she lives in Orlando and finishes her second clinical in a rehab department of a hospital.

We’re thankful for each of you!
