Questions for Study:

  • One of Satan’s cruelest achievements was/is to convince people that words don’t really hurt people and that we have the right before God to sin with our words (“freedom of speech”).
  • If we don’t understand how gossip and other evil speaking against others is judging the law, does that excuse our culpability? Does ignorance of the reason for God’s command, nullify His clear command? See 4:11.
  • How does willful disobedience to a command from God “judge/render an opinion” on it? How do we see this principle fleshed out in Genesis 3:1-7?
What specific, concrete helps does God give us to overcome our temptation to speak evil of others, especially fellow believers?
  • In II Timothy 3:1-5, Paul describes the spiritual condition of professed believers from which much evil-speaking proceeds. What is the root problem in such a person, which must be addressed?
  • Beyond seeking the Spirit’s filling (Ephesians 5:18), what fruit of the Spirit should we especially pray for if we struggle with gossip, evil speaking? See Galatians 5:19-23.
