News from the Fields – January 2022

May I please have 4 minutes of your time?

Teamwork makes the dreamwork.

Do you want to see something that you are a part of? Click the blue button below and you will be blown away by what

God is doing, and what you and we get to be a part of!

If you have another 4 minutes, please read this part:
The three missionary couples in this tribe were mobilized for missions during their time at college.
Then they came here to Bible School to build a foundation in God’s Word.
Then they went to missionary training school together for a couple years.
Then they raised support.
Then they headed to PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Then they moved into a tribal location together…
built relationships, learned their language, taught them to read and write, and lived side by side with the people until one day they…
Taught the story of God from beginning to end in their own language for the very first time!!
and MANY BELIEVED!
Now they are starting the teaching over from the beginning, this time mentoring the new believers to church leadership, teaching and eventually the missionaries will move out leaving behind a mature church.
Oh, and the missionaries are also translating the Bible into their own language!

One of the missionaries from this team spoke to us staff here at Bible School yesterday. He had tears in his eyes as he shared that one day we will get to celebrate in heaven with our new brothers and sisters in Christ.
This is a big deal!
This is the BIGGEST deal!
Thank you for being partners in global missions!!!.
One day we will all be together celebrating!

Great is your faithfulness Lamentations 3:23

Dear praying friend,
Happy New Year! We taught this verse to the Awana Cubbies at church this past month. It’s a good reminder to go back and remember God’s faithfulness in our lives—during both the good and hard times.

New email address
We no longer have the Hautle.org website or any of the connected email addresses.
Brent’s personal email is bhautle@gmail.com.
Jen’s personal email is homeschoolmomjen@gmail.com
Please change these in your address books. Thank you!

PRAISES

  • For the many Christmas clubs which took place during the last month worldwide.
  • For a successful hour-long InDesign seminar through Zoom, which we hope to turn into a monthly event.
  • For good progress being made toward European Conference materials.
  • Brent is recovering from a second bout with COVID, which was thankfully not as severe as the first time he had it. The rest of the family have had no symptoms during their quarantine.
  • We have lots of everyday/every moment blessings. We thank God for these.

REQUESTS

  • The Survival Camp materials are our largest task at the moment. Please pray we can get them done quickly in time for translation to begin for this summer.
  • Preparations for European Conference and the ability to travel to Germany in April. Because of the ever-changing COVID situation, it’s difficult to make travel arrangements.
  • Design and layout of the Youth Challenge books is also a priority. Pray good progress can be made on them.
  • All of us are involved in Awana at our church. Please pray as we lead, teach, encourage and help these boys and girls.
  • Amy and Christopher are considering becoming summer missionaries with CEF of Schuylkill County. Please pray for wisdom as they work through the decision-making process for whatever they decide for this summer.
  • The outside access door to my office has ripped from its frame and the entire door and frame needs replaced. Thankfully it’s back in place, but cannot be used. We’ve contacted several contractors who have been too busy to even assess the situation. Please pray we can find someone to replace it. It’s not just an inconvenience, but a security and insulation issue.

Thank you! We greatly covet your prayers!

The Bible League – January 2022

A Lifelong Calling

Pastor Lucas has felt a calling from the Lord since an early age. “At 10 years old, I was different than my friends,” he says. “I liked going to church. I loved the Bible.”

His passion didn’t fade with time. At 20, he was working for the government as an engineer in his home country of Argentina. But despite his success, he felt empty. He was making good money in a steady job, but Lucas’ passion to share the Gospel was still there. He finally quit his job and attended seminary, then continued to follow the Lord on a long and winding path that landed him in Visalia, California.

Visalia is an agricultural town in central California. In this town of 133,000 people, more than half the population is Hispanic. Many work 12-16 hours a day in the fields to support their families. They came to the U.S. to find a better life, but still carry the baggage they brought with them.

“The Hispanic community here is damaged emotionally because of people’s backgrounds and childhoods,” Lucas says. “Some of them ran away from their countries to get here. There are single moms. Abuse. A lot of bad backgrounds.”

Lucas

Through Bible League’s Church Planter Training, Lucas learned how to plant a thriving church and how to host Project Philip Bible studies in homes, places where people are more likely to open up to others. “I think the way to show Jesus’ love in Visalia is to open house churches, to hold Bible studies in houses,” he says. “Our vision is to transform this town.”

But Lucas can’t do it on his own. He feels blessed to be trained by Bible League because so many other church leaders lack that guidance. “We are in an area where people are not prepared biblically,” he says. “Most of the Hispanic pastors here do not have biblical training. Many churches have closed because they don’t continue to train leaders.”

It may seem odd that churches and church leaders in the U.S. lack training, but this is not uncommon in many communities around the country. In Visalia, there’s also a lack of Bibles. According to Lucas, only about six percent of the Hispanic community has access to God’s Word.

“The Bible is healing the people and closing the wound. We are giving people hope,” Lucas says. “The Lord can transform a family. Then, they can transform another family. The entire city can change. The Gospel must go outside the church. Everybody needs to meet Jesus.”

A Flea Market Encounter

A Flea Market Encounter

Terry and her husband, Ezequiel, are joyfully living out their faith in the mostly Hispanic community of Williams, California. Ezequiel has only been a believer for about three years, but the energetic couple is proof God is working in the hearts of people of all ages. Terry notes, “I am 70 and my husband is 75. God doesn’t care how old you are. He wants you saved.”

Each week, the couple works at the local flea market. Their table was right behind Rosa’s table—a Christian woman doing ministry in the flea market. Terry notes, “When we were working, we would listen to her praying for people.”

Terry believed in Jesus, but her faith wasn’t very strong. She notes, “When I listened to Rosa pray, it stirred something in my heart. One day, while I was working at the flea market, God told me to kneel, and I began praying.”

Soon after, Terry’s friend invited her to church. When she and her husband arrived, they were surprised to see a familiar face—Rosa. She says excitedly, “I came, and I saw Rosa! I said, ‘My goodness, it’s the lady from the flea market.’”

Since then, Terry and Ezequiel have been going to Iglesia Sinai. Terry can’t keep from smiling as she says, “I feel God wanted us at this church. We have been very, very happy here. I 100% feel like my faith has grown since being at this church. Every week, I’m excited to go. Every minute feels like heaven to me.”

Recently, Terry and Ezequiel attended a Project Philip Bible study training at Rosa’s church. They are looking forward to putting into action what they learned. Terry explains, “The training was beautiful. Sometimes you need to learn a better way to do things, and that’s what the training was for us. This has made my life and my husband’s life clearer. Now, we can work better outside of the church.”

Answered Prayers

Answered Prayers

Years ago, Keyla accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She was the only Christian in her entire family. “For many years, I have prayed for the conversion of my family members,” she says.

In 2017, Keyla and most of her family moved from their home in Venezuela to Chicago where she got involved in a local church. This year, she attended a Project Philip Bible study leader training in both Spanish and English. In this course, Keyla learned how to teach Bible studies in small groups.

Project Philip is an answer to my prayers,” she says.

Once she finished the training, she immediately put her new skills to work and started a small group Bible study. Her first student was her mother, who still lives in Venezuela. Keyla hosts her classes online so that her mother can participate.

In July, Keyla started leading Bible League’s Project Philip discipleship Bible study with a small group. At the end of the first lesson, another of Keyla’s prayers was answered. “My beloved mother received Jesus as her only Lord and Savior for the glory of God.” Praise the Lord!

SMARTER WAYS TO GIVE

Giving Through your Will

Know the peace of mind that comes from having a plan in place. When it comes to your Will, keep these things in mind:

1. Your Will lets you determine the next stewards of your God-given resources. It allows you to care for your loved ones and also continue to support Bible League and other favorite ministries. Does your Will reflect your values, passions, and priorities? It should reflect what matters most to you.

2. Life changes, and your Will should, too. If it’s been more than three years since you looked at it, it’s probably time to give it a thorough review.

3. Inform your family or personal representatives about your plan. Be sure to let them know where they can find your important documents and anything they’ll need to access them.

Additional Prayer Requests

As the year begins, let’s pray over all of the opportunities God will provide this year. Let’s pray for all the Project Philip Bible studies He will organize, the Church Planter Training classes He will start, the Bible-based Literacy programs He will facilitate. Let’s pray for each person who will be reached by this ministry and pray that He would open their hearts to the truth of the Gospel.

These last two years have been difficult for the entire world. We pray God’s blessing over 2022. Pray for healing—both physically and spiritually—for every nation. Pray for unity and peace among all. Pray for believers who are persecuted, believers who struggle to share the Gospel in their communities, believers who feel stagnant in their faith. Pray that all believers would experience God this year in new, life-giving ways. Finally, pray for those who do not know Jesus, that this year would be the one that changes everything for them.

Thank you for your prayers and financial support. Your gifts to Bible League International help provide Bibles and training to a world in need.

Brian Renes – United Bible Society – January 2022

Brian and Donna Renes

The Bible is for everyone. In working with the United Bible Societies, every task aims to fulfill that mission.

Our goal is to make the Bible available to everyone in their heart language.

The United Bible Societies is a network of national Bible Societies around the world (shown in the photo above). We currently train and support over 400 active Bible translation projects. In 2021, we focused on starting many more, especially in Africa and Asia. The UBS is committed to supporting all churches as well as reaching into areas where no church yet exists.

Can you imagine not having a Bible? What would church be like with scripture readings in a foreign language? That is the reality for millions of people. This is a type of poverty that affects hearts and souls.

One way to reach the far corners of the world is through the digital distribution of the Bible. Getting a print copy of a full Bible takes years and can be an extremely difficult task to accomplish. In 2021, we put more effort into making partial Bibles available digitally. In other words, if a few books of a translation were completed and checked we put them in apps so that anyone, anywhere could immediately download that part of the translation. In some cases, this was only one or two books of the Bible. Over and over we hear that churches are grateful for these portions and that is confirmed in the number of downloads we see.

Around the world, there is an increase in digital distribution. With it becoming more common for people to use their phones to read the Bible, we continue to put effort into making that a smooth process. Easy, digital, and free access to the Bible is great but it also means that there is less income for Bible Societies. They depend on the sale and distribution of print copies to fund much of their work. During the pandemic, those sales have been more difficult, which results in it being harder to keep current projects running and harder to fund new projects.

In 2021, most of my time training and giving support was online. Some of those hours were with larger groups and various teams, and at other times with a single project. Virtual meetings fill my days.

How can you help? Prayer comes first. It is the foundation for translators and critical for advancing mission. Efforts would fail if not for faithful prayer partners. The message would not go out. Financial support is also needed. It is always needed. More can get accomplished if there are funds for the equipment, the salaries, and training events. Each of us has a part in making a difference. Thank you for your interest in and support of Bible translation.

Your partners in mission,
Brian and Donna Renes

CareNet of Wayne County – January 2022

Dear Friends,

As we begin this year some of the same praises and needs continue for Care Net. We begin the biggest fundraiser of the year this month (the Baby Bottle Boomerang). Other praises and needs are newer and growing. More lives are at stake as we approach the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

1,  Pray against “self-managed” abortions enabled by telehealth and remote “care”. Pray against “abortion tourism” to New York.

2.Pray for peer advocates to be able to train and participate here as our needs increase, either once every week or two, or on call.

3.Pray for clients to come into Care Net and find what they really need: a new way of life and making choices.

  1. Praise God for Melissa Kowaleski, who has joined Care Net as office administrator recently.
  2. Praise God for Dr. Angela Kristan, who is here on Wednesdays and Fridays. Praise God for Katherine Wheeler, who is helping individuals and families in her trauma-informed practice here every week.
  3. Thank God for the opportunity to go to Hannick Hall in Newark. Pray for us, to put on the whole armor of God.

“12For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

See Ephesians 6:10-20.

Blessings to You in 2022!

The Johnson’s – December 2021

News from Tom and Leslie Johnson

May you have a blessed Christmas and New Year,
filled with health, peace, and joy!

Tom’s Update

In January it will be 28 years that we have been on staff with Global Scholars, about a decade longer than the adventures of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, but, so far as I can see, our quest is not finished. My current chapter started almost three years ago when we started working with Indonesian Muslims to protect religious freedom. For me this required months of research, 40,000+ miles of travel, countless video and phone calls, writing academic and popular articles, writing one book and co-authoring (and co-editing) another book, giving speeches in person and online, participating in podcast interviews, speaking at last summer’s big event in Washington, DC, and then helping to report on the event.

However, this long chapter is not finished. Our Muslim/Christian joint team has two events on the drawing board, one about a year from now, another about two years out, probably one in Asia and one in Europe, hopefully including high-level participation by Roman Catholic scholars and bishops, along with the Muslim/Evangelical team. These events will require research, writing articles, speeches, etc.

About me: after three strenuous years I was exhausted, partly because of pain in my leg that was injured 23 years ago. The docs have read the CT and MRI and recommend a hip replacement. I hope to get to the point where I can sit in an airplane and walk a distance without much pain. Now I am one of the people who sit during the singing at church. Of course, arranging surgery takes longer than anyone likes.

This fall I finished writing Christian Ethics in Secular Cultures, volume 2: Culture, Hermeneutics, Natural Law, Islam, and Missions. It will be published soon by the Theological Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance. Volume 1 was published in 2014. As with several of my books, I expect it to be available from major booksellers a few months after initial publication by the WEA. As part of the WEA agreement to have these books online as free downloads, I do not receive any royalties from the publishing companies. This is missionary publishing. (See insert below.)

The Comenius Institute in Prague, which we helped start in 1999, is flourishing amidst challenges. As board president I receive frequent reports. In 2021, three of the PhD students in our mentoring program finished their degrees, one in New Testament, one in psychology, one in missiology (at Oxford). Our Roma (Gypsy) study program is supporting and mentoring several leaders from Roma churches to get their high school equivalency. During covid lockdowns this has included buying computers for them. One of the men I started to mentor almost 20 years ago, Jan Habl, was just promoted to full professor in a Czech university and serves on our board. He commented recently on the mentoring program for PhD students, which Dr. Peter Cimala took over from me already 8 years ago, “I remember wandering in the early days of my Ph.D. thesis. Tom literally saved me.” Dr. Habl is a specialist in ethical education and is fully transparent about his Christian faith while teaching in one of the most secular regions of Europe. Some of his books are now available on Amazon, an example of our international mission work coming back to help re-evangelize North America; see When No One is Looking.

What is Missionary Publishing?

Missionary publishing = publishing resources for people who may not have the money or access to the resources in North America. The reason? Over 90% of the resources for Christians are in North America; however, more than 90% of Christians live outside of North America, where there are no resources! Hence, the need to provide free to low cost books and other resources for people outside North America.

Leslie’s Update

In November, I had the privilege of training people here in Fayetteville about cross-cultural issues we face when working with refugees. It was a four-week series about our biblical call to reach out to strangers, what culture is, and the differences we have between cultures. I had the joy, too, to share one of the evenings with my daughter, Aimee. As a licensed professional marriage and family therapist, she has had training in helping people with trauma and PTSD. Rather than try to teach that myself, I asked Aimee to come in to share what trauma and PTSD are, how we can recognize signs, and how to help.  I learned a lot that evening listening to her.

ACSI EU and Global

I continue to work with ACSI in the areas of international accreditation and European conferences. Right now is a slow time for me as we are between the big conferences. I also continue to work with ACSI Global in the area of international Christian school accreditation. Currently, I am working with a school in Bolivia to prepare them for the accreditation team visit in April. Lord willing, we will be able to do that in person.

ICCM Cohort Update

The board overseeing the Institute for Cross-Cultural Mission (ICCM) in Washington, DC, met mid-November and decided to close the institute for a variety of reasons. This means the end of my cohort studies. It was meant to be three years long, but I was part of it for only half that time. However, I am encouraged that the Lord used the cohort to introduce me to new friends who are also eager to study, and to help me learn a lot about our country’s racial tensions. He also used the cohort to push me into a ministry with training volunteers working with refugees.

So, NOW what?

Starting December 1, 2021, I am now officially working three hours a week for the Mission to North America Committee of the Presbyterian Church of America in Refugee and Immigrant Ministries. My official title is “Cross-Cultural Training Specialist.” Besides running trainings for churches who work with refugees, I will be helping the Director of the Refugee and Immigrant Ministries, Mrs. Pat Hatch, with a variety of administrative tasks.

I will also be volunteering with the We Welcome – NC group with training volunteers. We are planning future training opportunities for their volunteers in the Raleigh/Durham area, as well as churches who are interested in refugee ministries. One of the women also works with Welcome House, which is developing short-term housing for refugee families as they look for more permanent housing.

I am excited to see how the Lord leads and uses me to be an encouragement to others doing cross-cultural work right here in the US. Please pray for the Lord’s wisdom as I prepare and teach people about cross-cultural understanding.

A Much-Needed Time for Rest for Tom

You have watched and read and seen the fruit of Tom’s work these past few years with the Humanitarian Muslims. The amount of energy and work he has put in is, from my (Leslie’s) perspective, immense. Now that the jointly produced book has been launched, Tom needs to stop and rest.

We know that God does not want us living a life of exhaustion all the time. There are times to push hard; but then there are times to stop and re-gain strength by resting.

Additionally, Tom is having hip and knee problems again and may be facing 1 or more surgeries over the next year. We will know more early in December exactly what the prognosis is.

This has led us to think it is time for Tom to take a sabbatical. He needs to stop and rest his body and his brain. And he needs to have his hip and knee treated appropriately.

Thus, we are planning on Tom taking a year-long sabbatical. The first few months are to be complete rest and medical work, a deep sabbath, allowing God to rejuvenate his body and soul. The next several months would be a time of praying and studying, researching, and writing what he is called to write.

Probably in those last few months, he would be working again with the Humanitarian Muslims, preparing for a big event next September 2022. But this would be at a slower, less intense level than he has had over the last three years.

Twice Tom has had extended times for research and thinking, a research grant 35 years ago and a partial sabbatical 18 years ago. Much of what he has done on the international stage arose from what he learned during those times. People we trust have recommended that he not retire anytime soon because there is a more for him to do. We want this to be a time of equipping for the future.

Please join us in prayer that he could completely pass off current duties for this season. Pray, too, for him to truly rest. (We all have a hard time with that, don’t we?) And pray for the Lord’s wisdom about his next writing projects.
UPDATE: The Lord has provided people to take over most of Tom’s responsibilities for the next few months. We are very grateful for the Lord’s provision.

Special Refugee Update

We have no news to report. The paperwork for the refugee family is still stuck in the system. Please continue to pray the paperwork gets processed SOON so they can transition from the refugee camp to the new country as soon as possible.

For the first time since covid hit….

We are behind in our support account. It is a bit concerning since we are currently not traveling at all to Europe or other places. In the past, travel is what drained our support account. And we have not been to our supporting churches. Additionally, many of our individual supporters are getting to that age of retirement and are unable to continue to support us, and rightly so. The Lord is the provider God who will take care of our needs. Please be praying for new supporters, and opportunities to speak at churches about our work.

Praises:
We thank the Lord for:

  • Tom’s opportunities to speak and write openly about the Christian faith while working with Muslim leaders and diplomats to promote religious freedom;
  • Leslie’s new opportunity to join local and national ministries training volunteers working with refugees about cross-cultural values and communication;
  • Gifted colleagues who have taken over significant parts of Tom’s work, allowing him to slow down;
  • Tom’s opportunity to get a hip replacement in 2022;
  • Being able to live in peace while sometimes communicating regarding people who have suffered horrendous abuse and are fleeing for their lives

Prayers:

Please join us in praying for:

  • NEW: Pray for wisdom for both of us as we pray through the Lord’s calling for us in 2022. What does the Lord want us to be working on?
    • For Leslie: more refugee work? More educational consultations? And of course, investing in grandchildren.
    • For Tom: rest? focus on hip replacement and health? A book to write?
  • Pray for protection from discouragement for the refugee family we have been helping. Their government paperwork is still moving slowly. Pray for the paperwork to get finished and for them to move to the new country safely and efficiently.
  • Also continue to pray for the refugee family’s transition to a new culture. They will need tremendous courage to face huge challenges in their up-coming transition.
  • That God would renew our churches so that we can more powerfully both proclaim the light of Christ and demonstrate his grace in a world of pain.

Thank you for your faithful prayer for us as well as your financial gifts that allow us to do the work He has called us to.
