Good News Jail Ministry

The ministry began in Virginia in 1961. The purpose was organizing a visitation program for the benefit of inmates of institutions; witnessing to inmates and their families; aiding in a physical and spiritual rehabilitation of men and women upon their release from an institution; and provision of an educational program to encourage further education upon release. This was accomplished by the provision of trained, ordained men and women to serve as staff chaplains in correctional institutions throughout the US and abroad. From one chaplain in the beginning, Good News Jail Ministry program now provides over 390 staff chaplains, serving 319 institutions in 22 states and 18 countries. Chaplains visit in the Monroe and Wayne County jails several days a week, to counsel and to teach jail Bible studies.
